  • January 13, 2021: The workshop successfully took place virtually. Post-workshop materials (pictures, slides, links to the proceedings) are available on the Program page.
  • October 22, 2020: A preliminary workshop program has been posted.
  • October 1, 2020: The deadline for the final versions of the papers has been extended to October 18, 2020.
  • September 30, 2020: The keynote this year will be delivered by Kevin Kissell from Google.
  • September 24, 2020: We accepted 6 out of 7 submissions.
  • August 18, 2020: The deadline has been extended to August 28, 2020.
  • August 5, 2020: SC20 is going virtual as do all the associated events including our workshop! The new date of the workshop will be Friday, November 13th. We expect the bulk of the content to be pre-recorded, with a live Q&A session (details to be determined). The submission process remains unchanged. Scope

The complexity of node architectures in supercomputers increases as we cross petaflop milestones on the way towards Exascale. Increasing levels of parallelism in multi- and many-core chips and emerging heterogeneity of computational resources coupled with energy and memory constraints force a reevaluation of our approaches towards operating systems and runtime environments.

The International Workshop on Runtime and Operating Systems for Supercomputers provides a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and discuss research questions that are relevant to upcoming supercomputers. In addition to typical workshop publications, we encourage novel and possibly immature ideas, provided that they are interesting and on-topic. Well argued position papers are also welcome.

Topics of Interest

The topics include, but are not limited to:
  • OS and runtime system scalability on many-node and multi/many-core systems
  • management of heterogeneous and reconfigurable compute resources, including FPGAs, GPUs, etc.
  • distributed/hybrid/partitioned OSes and runtime systems for Supercomputing
  • system noise analysis and prevention
  • interaction between middleware, runtime system, and the OS
  • modeling and performance analysis of runtime systems
  • the use of AI techniques in the autotuning of system software
  • OS and runtime considerations for large-volume, high-performance I/O
  • memory management and emerging memory technologies
  • OS and runtime aspects of HPC in the cloud, including virtualization and containers
  • the role of OS and runtime system in minimizing power usage
